Although most of 2014 has already been spent frequenting nightclubs and bars, most of that in all honesty (promise), was in the name of research and therefore work. So it was about time I let my hair down properly and what better way to do it, than at a 12hr techno rave! NONE, is the answer, its blinking perfect. I’ve had these tickets since the beginning of the year, when I was frantically pushed in to my purchase, by a dear friend who knew this would be a sell out…and one day later it was! So we’ve been literally counting down the weeks, days, hrs and even minutes…until this event finally unfolded!
Lets give you a spot of background knowledge:-
Music On is the brainchild of legendary Neopolitan techno DJ, Marco Carola, who as he puts it Marco puts it, was born with a three-deck style of mixing. This record label, club night and artistic platform, was created with the propose of producing a cutting-edge club sound, along with unique events across the world. Established in 2011, Marco felt the need to expand his musical realm and create a home for up and coming, talented and inspired artists. The only requirement is good quality music, which is the standard for everything Marco Carola puts his stamps on “its all about the music”.
This global ambassador of techno, was instrumental in the development of the electronic scene in the early 90s, taking this flourishing new sound straight out of Italy, to the rest of the world. In 1995′s First Planet EP he became the first artist to commit techno to vinyl, paving the way for an entire generation of producers. These days Marco is a mainstay of Richie Hawtin’s Minus, Primate Recordings and Plus 8 labels, who, much like Marco himself, are one of the driving forces behind techno’s firm foundations within the worldwide dance scene.
Over twenty years later Marco is still one of the most respected artists amongst the techno scene, widely regarded as one of the key factors in driving the genre towards worldwide recognition within electronic music. As a revered producer and successful label head, Marco has spearheaded imprints such as Design Music, Zenit, Question, One Thousands and Do.Mi.No. In addition to five critically acclaimed albums, including his most recent Play It Loud, Marco has also been responsible for a clutch of seminal mix compilations. In 2006, his mix for legendary London club Fabric’s series was a lesson in sleek, future-facing minimalism. That was followed up by well received compilations for Time Warp in 2009. In 2010 Cocoon label boss Sven Väth asked him to mix the Frankfurt based label’s Party Animals CD alongside Nick Curly, which took Carola’s DJ taste and skills to new heights. Famed for his energetic and impressive style he has remained one of the most in demand DJs on the planet throughout the last two decades. Favouring mammoth eight hour plus sets, Marco is predisposed to a subtle working of the crowd that has made him a favourite among fans from Ibiza to New York, South America and beyond.
So what about the night then:-
Definition of a perfect rave; you arrive, you dance, you dance, you dance, you look at your watch and its over! This night was just a prime example of what big distance dancing is all about, you don’t get bored, you NEVER get bored, its like being on a insanely intense rollercoaster, where the DJ tickles you in to a comfortable place on the dance floor, you dig in, embed, plot up for the night…and that’s when it starts. The drop in techno is quite spectacular, just as you’ve recovered, your being lured back in to your safe house, before it happens all over again. Ah but there is also melody in all of this, but its subtle and sweet and therefore not in anyway contrived, hypnotic and driving. No shufflers would be scene here, its survival of quite literally, the fittest. I wasn’t ready for the 10am shocker, that meant it was home time, sign of a good night. As for the venue, Electric Brixton, is a stellar affair, is a converted 1913 cinema The Palladium Picture House on the Town Hall Parade. Another truly seminal London venue, which has had steeped in history and has had its fair share of controversy and accolade. Its million pound facelift where possible back to its original interior features with some twists for the 21st century. It boasts an huge stage with unsurpassed sightlines making it an ideal venue for dramatic club events. As for the Music On brand as a whole, the inspirational maturity it is stopped in, is echoed by its cutting edge, yet contemporary, classily executed design. For us its a pure unadulterated excellence all round!
Lets hear/watch the man in action, since its all about the music, Mr. Carola…will you stick some Music on!
